Well, it’s Day 17 of my 30 Day ART Challenge. Are you ready???
I sat down last night and started inking this. The inks came out pretty good, and I was excited to start blocking in these shadows, and see the image start to take shape – or at least start to resemble what was in my head. (I have a TON of respect for Mike Mignola, and his ability to work in the negative space like he does – the few times I’ve tried to emulate his style… it makes my brain hurt… a lot!).
Once I got the blacks in… I looked at it for a good long while. And was kinda disappointed. I guess I just couldn’t see ‘it’. And to be absolutely honest… I almost scrapped it. It wasn’t until I started cutting further into the blacks that I ‘found my way back home’. I kept tweaking the shadows a little, and finally saw where the final image was hiding. I look at this kinda ‘shadow play’ kinda like carving outta stone. You start with a large area of black (not unlike a slab of stone), and you just have to keep chipping away at pieces, until the ART underneath presents itself. Or some such nonsense.
Anyway, I’m actually pretty happy with this now, and have decided that this will be the first of my prints for the upcoming Con. I printed one out at 11x17, and it looks pretty good. What do you guys think, would you pay $5.00 for a signed print like this?
Well, that’s all I got for today, I think I’m gonna start on the image of Geela Dom tonight.
See you all tomorrow!
